[Tennis] Grade III Comprehensive Lighting Retrofit Project

Project Overview

Located in the core area of Hangzhou, Xixi Bafangcheng Sports & Culture Center covers a total construction area of 15,563 ㎡. As a leading sports lighting supplier, we installed professional indoor gym lighting systems across the multi-sport venue to support an indoor swimming pool, indoor tennis court lights, basketball court lights, badminton court lights, pickleball court lights, squash courts, indoor football field lights and outdoor tennis court lights.

Project Requirements

As a high-end urban complex with a distinctive architectural shape, the venue has limited space for luminaire installation. The client required our customized sports lighting fixtures to reach competition-grade illuminance uniformity and anti-glare standards, while ensuring installation safety and seamless aesthetic integration.

Project Assessment

Reference Standards for Sports Lighting (JGJ & FIFA Compliance)

Terminology Explanation:

  • Horizontal Illuminance (Eh): Ensures uniform brightness on playing surfaces.

  • Vertical Illuminance (Ev): Enhances the stereoscopic perception of athletes and balls for cameras.

  • Illuminance Uniformity (U1/U2): Higher values eliminate alternating bright and dark stripes on courts.

  • Glare Rating (GR): Lower values prevent temporary visual impairment for athletes; GR ≤ 50 for HDTV events.

  • Color Rendering Index (Ra): Restores true colors; Ra ≥ 90 is required for HDTV broadcasting.

  • Flicker Ratio: Must be controlled below 0.5% to support slow-motion playback.

Overall Solution

Core Design

Upward Reflected Gym Lighting: Indirect light as the main source with supplementary directional fill light.

Working Principle

All luminaires project light upward to ceilings and overhead structures to form uniform basic lighting via diffuse reflection. Adjustable directional fill light is added to local low-illuminance areas such as pool ends and court sidelines.

Core Advantages

  • Totally eliminate direct glare and deliver comfortable vision for athletes looking upward by safely lowering the glare rating (GR).

  • Soft light with faint shadows, ideal for sports with high visual requirements including swimming and badminton.

  • Fully concealed luminaires without damaging the original architectural style.

Key Design Parameters (Swimming Pool as Example)

Intelligent Lighting Control System

  • System Architecture

  • Central control host + Regional intelligent gateway supporting intelligent dimming systems + Programmable control panel + Mobile APP

  • Control Protocol

  • 0-10V or DMX512 / DALI control protocols (cost-effective solutions)

Preset Scene Modes

  • Professional Match Mode: 100% power, illuminance ≥ 500 lux

  • Amateur Match Mode: 80% power, illuminance ≈ 300 lux

  • Training Mode: 50% power, illuminance ≈ 200 lux

  • Daily & Cleaning Mode: 30% power, illuminance ≈ 150 lux

  • Energy-saving Mode: Only safety lights activated (10% power)

Zoning Strategy

Each venue is an independent control zone; Swimming lanes support segmented control for early sessions.

Energy-saving Performance

Annual power saving rate reaches 45% compared with traditional constant lighting.

Key Points for Construction & Commissioning

  1. Embedded Installation: Embed load-bearing steel plates for side-wall mounting; Brackets support ±5° angle fine adjustment.

  2. Waterproof & Corrosion Resistance: All luminaires and junction boxes in the wet swimming pool environments are rated IP66 waterproof dustproof. Exposed metal parts adopt 316 stainless steel or hot-dip galvanization to ensure they are highly corrosion resistant.

  3. Commissioning Process

    • Power on single luminaires to calibrate reflected light spots.

    • Turn on lights in groups and test illuminance at grid points (2m spacing, 0.5m above the water surface).

    • Adjust angles until U2 ≥ 0.6.

    • Glare inspection: Verify no direct glare from swimmers’ viewing perspective.

  4. Acceptance Standard: Implemented in strict accordance with China's JGJ 153 standard (JGJ 153-2016 Standard for Lighting Design and Test of Sports Venues).
