What is IK Rating for LED Lights? Guide to Impact Resistance

For LED lights, especially those designed by a professional sports lighting manufacturer and installed outdoors or in industrial environments, having a suitable IK rating is crucial for ensuring durability and longevity. Higher IK ratings are essential for protecting against impacts from wind-blown debris, accidental collisions, and vandalism. For instance, street lights, floodlights, and stadium lights benefit from higher IK ratings due to their exposure to harsher conditions.

What is IK Rating?

The IK rating system is a standardized measure of the mechanical impact resistance of LED fixtures. It’s different from IP rating evaluated waterproof and dust-proof, the IK rating indicates the energy level of impact an enclosure can withstand without being damaged. It was established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC 62262 standard), this system rates the level of protection a LED fixture provides against physical impacts, ranging from IK00 (no protection) to IK10 (the highest level of protection).

Why IK rating is important for LED lights?

IK Rated LED lights are important especially if they are in public areas, high traffic areas, commercial environments. High IK rating ensures safety for both environment and people. For some places like football courts, streets, roadside, and sports stadiums, it is critical to ensure that the lights can work properly even if they are damaged or broken because of a certain degree of impact by balls and other objects. With a low IK rating, it’s more likely to be broken which will lead to a hazard, especially in public areas, such as broken fragments or lack of required illumination/information. Therefore analyzing the risk of an impact is important for deciding if you need a fixture with a high/low IK Rating.

Testing and Certification

To achieve a specific IK rating, products undergo rigorous testing. For lower ratings (IK01 to IK06), a spring impact hammer is used, while higher ratings (IK07 to IK10) are tested with a pendulum hammer that delivers more significant energy impacts. These tests simulate real-world conditions to ensure the product’s resilience. All of our LED lights experienced serious test in CPS lighting's own laboratory, so that making sure our customers receive good quality products and are not afraid of third part agency to test.

Material and Design Considerations

The materials and design of the enclosure significantly influence its IK rating. Common materials used include stainless steel, aluminium alloy, tempered glass, glass-reinforced polyester, and polycarbonate, each offering different levels of impact resistance and other properties like UV resistance and recyclability. Additionally, the thickness and shape of the enclosure play a role; thicker materials and rounded designs can help distribute impact energy more effectively, enhancing durability.

Practical Applications

IK-rated LED lights are used in areas with high risk of impact, such as industrial zones, public spaces, and places prone to vandalism. Ensuring the appropriate IK rating for the intended application can prevent damage, reduce maintenance costs, and enhance safety and reliability. Generally, a bidding LED lighting project require la mps to reach IK08 rating, and some even require the IK10.

In summary, understanding and utilizing the correct IK rating for LED lights is essential for their performance and longevity in various environments, particularly those exposed to mechanical impacts.
